RSS Aggregators/Feeds

This week I have been learning about RSS Aggregators/Feeds. I don’t think I could afford the time to subscribe to lots of different websites which would give me numerous updates.  I say this as I’m normally studying part time and working two casual jobs.  It’s interesting learning about this technology though and I could see its benefits in a library.
Patrons could subscribe to their libraries and library newsletters etc and receive updates on latest titles, book clubs, knitting circles, school holiday activities etc.

The pages I have subscribed to include:

City of Cockburn Public Libraries
Central Institute of Technology
Perthnow.com.au
Hotmail.com
Western Australian Public Libraries learning 2.0 basics

Wikis in the library

After viewing the 3 wikis - NSW State Library Readers' Advisory Services wiki, Games and Public Libraries wiki and the Twighlight Saga wiki.  I can see the types of information that can be posted on wikis and can see how they can be used for many different purposes.  I think it's very interesting being able to have a central place where readers can view, edit and contribute their own information and ideas. As the course notes for Week 5 of Web 2.0 state: "The goal is to use a wiki to create a collaborative piece of information, sharing the knowledge of all contributors."

I think libraries could put quite a lot of information on wikis both internally and externally.  I think they could post information such as upcoming events for clients of the library, staff meetings, training opportunities, any news updates from the library, discussions, photos, videos etc. These are just a few of the many types of information that could be included on the wiki.

A day in the life of my dog

Photo sourced from Flickr - User Che89

I have selected this photo as I have a one year old Border Collie.  She is obsessed with balls - netballs, small boucy balls and tennis balls.  She drags a netball around by chewing a flat part of the ball.  My boyfriend is outside painting and she just loves to be around him all day following him around.  She will drop the ball near him so he has to kick it constantly and she runs around flat out chasing it.  I would love to have her energy!!

My first post

We've all heard of iSnack 2.0 and USB 2.0 but my first posting is about Web 2.0.  I am currently studying the Diploma of Library/Information Studies and am working two casual jobs - one at Curtin University Library and of course the City of Cockburn Libraries.

I have had to create my own blog for an assignment last semester and we have touched on Web 2.0 technologies in class such as podcasts, wikis, blogs, twitter and facebook and I have set up my own del.i.cious account with several of my favourite websites.  I have had a lot of experience in using Facebook and sometimes find myself lost in it for a good hour or two.  It can be very addictive and I have to check it at least once a day to read everyone's statuses.

I'm hoping to learn more about Web 2.0 through this training course and hoping to strengthen my existing knowledge of Web 2.0 technologies.  I think it is a great idea for staff to be aware of the current technologies being used in libraries.
